Pupils, students encouraged to have a reading culture for better performance

Thika sub county education sector on Friday got a facelift after a renowned businessman Alfred Wanyoike presented a donation of 1000 text books to Garissa, New Garissa road primary schools and Broadway secondary school, all in Thika constituency.

The books which include novels and literature were a donation from the USA sourced by Wanyoike in efforts to improve the education in the area.

Wanyoike revealed that he was targeting schools in the slum areas as the parents have many basic matters to attend to and therefore such books may not be in their hierarchy of needs.

‘We have targeted the schools in the slum areas as the parents here have more to do with the food and shelter and some of these books to improve on language may seem as a luxury to them and they cannot afford,’ he said.

He said that the books will help improve the performances of the students challenging them to have a reading culture.

‘I have decided to donate these books here to help you improve on your language and also encourage you to have a reading culture,’’ Wanyoike said.

“It is only education that makes all people equal and so if you read these books, they will help you have powerful insights and help you build a productive life,” he said.

New Garissa road Primary School Head teacher, Jane Kiarie said that the books will help their pupils by improving their reading skills as well as their performance.

She attributed the poor reading culture to the economic level of the parents in the area saying that the donation was an eye opener to the pupils as availability of resources goes hand in hand with utilization of the same resources.

‘Parents have many challenges and may not afford to buy text books for their students and so we are privilege to have received the donation and they will help improve students language and boost their performances,” James Mwangi, Broadway secondary school principal said.
